about
Polocorp, from the fast ascending French electronic duo Polo & Pan, has joined forces with the vibrant Israeli /Iranian artist Liraz, for a glorious remix of her song "Lalei".
Initially included on her widely acclaimed album 'Zan', "Lalei" means lullaby in Farsi. It's a traditional Iranian song which has been sung by the women in Liraz’s family for decades. Liraz's parents, Iranian Jews, moved from Tehran to Tel Aviv in the 1970s. Yet although Liraz was born and raised in Israel and is now is based in Jaffa, Tel Aviv, she’s always believed that “my culture is Iranian”.
The combination of Liraz's mesmerising vocals and Polocorp's shimmering house pop sonics is massive and inspired. Polocorp is well-known for his creative melding of dancefloor excitement and global/tropical textures and tells us that the “remix is an attempt to transpose the epic dimension of the original track into a dancefloor experience. It took me on quite an adventure!” Liraz is equally excited about the collaboration between her and Polocorp. "He turned Lalai into a beautiful meditation and imagination of the Iran that I'm longing for so much. This is the essence that I hear in the Lalai remix."
For her album ‘Zan’ (released by Glitterbeat Records at the end of 2020) Liraz collaborated online with Iran-based musicians and composers. Everything had to be secretive to avoid the gaze of Tehran’s mullahs and secret police. Clandestine collaborations that started in the shadows but burst out of the speakers in a mix of traditional Persian instruments, the instruments that touched Liraz as she grew up, alongside club beats and call-to-action melodies. 'Zan' is full of shimmering electro-pop meets pulsing dance rhythms and retro Persian sonics.
